Xiadu Fm base reconstruction

Xiadu Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Early Cretaceous, K1x, (37)

Province:
Fujian

Type Locality and Naming

Western Fujian. The Fujian Regional Geological Survey Team erected the Xiadu volcanic rock in 1960. The section for the designation is near the Xiadu Village north of the Yongan City of Fujian.

Lithology and Thickness

The Xiadu Formation is represented by a set of mainly purple red acidic lava. It is 288.00 m thick.

Lithology Pattern:
Lava

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its base is unconformable contact marked by dark red and gray green rhyolite porphyry with a tuff bed in the middle part that is distinguished from the underlying Yuanpan Fm.

Upper contact

The top is a disconformable contact bounded by the appearance of gray green tuffaceous shale of the Bantou Fm

Regional extent

The formation is distributed in west Fujian. It is monomorphic and persistent in lithology, characterized by mainly purple red acidic lava. It is generally 300-600 m in thickness and increases slightly in thickness from southwest to northwest of Fujian.

Fossils

In Taozhikeng of Mingxi, it yields bivalves Pisidium tazhinensis and Cyrena sp.

Age

"In addition, there is limited volcanic rocks of the Xiadu Formation (Kxd) in western Fujian which is an equivalent stratum to the Xiaoxi Formation in eastern Fujian, from which the acidic rocks are of 132–135 Ma in age (Liu et al., 2016)." – Quoted from (Guangfu Xing, Jianqing Li, Zheng Duan, Mingxuan Cao, Minggang Yu, Pingli Chu, Rong Chen.
